Weather Forecasting for Landscape Photography

Forget All the Weather Apps!

Weather apps are simply not built for photographers. Apart from the fact that they are sufficiently precise, they don't allow us to predict real photography weather. There exist much better alternatives. Have you ever asked yourself why pro photographers seem to have so much "luck" with the weather for their photos? Weather and light is not a question of luck, it is predictable!

Weather for Landscape Photographers

In more than 30 years in landscape photography, I have learned that the weather has the biggest impact in my images. Composition is important and can be controlled by photographers. But the weather seems to be something most photographers associate mistakenly just with luck.

I think that is because, most photographers haven't found out yet how to predict the weather in a really accurate way, so that it doesn't only get reliable, but furthermore allows to predict even spectacular weather phenomena like:

  • red fire skies
  • golden clouds
  • light rays breaking through
  • rainbows
  • april weather (sun/rain at once)
  • games between light and shadow
  • alpen glow
  • seascape weather like spectacular waves or flat sea
  • astro photography phenomena like northern lights, milky way, meteor showers

... and much more. Just to address some here.

Photography Weather

How Much is Really Predictable?

There are no limits, actually. It is even possible to predict the shapes of the clouds, because that is given by the way of how they got built. Fog, mist, atmospheric softness, cloud inversions are things landscape photographers love, because that can add mood to an image. But weather apps just look at the raw data of one single point, which is not enough for getting a relieable result. It is more than important to look around, if the weather around supports the weather at our photo spot.

But it is not only all about getting more accurate weather forecasts. The impact on someone's photography even explodes when he is in the right place when there will occure an amazing firesky over a lake, or when there will a lightray break through moody clouds, or when there will a rainbow appear. These things are predictable. Things like that are mentioned in the e-book above!
